{'I could have killed them' - Lawson faces dangerous incident with F1 track officials
Formula 1 driver Liam Lawson revealed he barely escaped a potentially fatal incident during Sunday's F1 event in Mexico when two marshals darted across the track immediately ahead of his car
The dangerous situation occurred on the third rotation when safety workers were observed on the circuit as Lawson was rejoining the race following an early pitstop to replace his broken nose section
Competitor's Live Reaction
Moments later, the team's competitor Lawson radioed to his team engineer saying: "Is this for real? Did you just see that? I could have... killed them"
"I truly couldn't comprehend what I was witnessing"
"I exited on a new set of hards, and then I arrived at Turn One and there were just two individuals sprinting across the track"
"I nearly hit one of them, truthfully, it was so dangerous"
Track Safety Questioned
"Obviously there's been a miscommunication at some point but I've never encountered that before, and I haven't really seen that in the past. It's pretty unacceptable"
"We cannot comprehend how on a live track safety personnel can be allowed to just run across the track like that. I'm clueless about the cause, I'm certain we'll get some form of reasoning, but this absolutely cannot recur"
Governing Body Reviewing
Formula 1's governing body, the FIA, is actively examining the circumstances
"Subsequent to a first corner event, the race directors was informed that debris was present on the track at the critical section of that bend" commented the regulatory authority
"During the third lap, safety personnel were notified and made ready to enter the track and remove the wreckage once the entire field had cleared the area"
"Immediately when it was understood that Lawson had pitted, the instructions to dispatch personnel were canceled and a caution signal was raised in that section"
"Our inquiry continues what transpired following that moment"
