The United States central bank reduced borrowing costs on Wednesday, representing the second reduction in the current year during financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.
Move Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank
The decision to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs even with persistent inflation.
Central Bank Announcement Highlights Labor Market Changes
In a announcement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have slowed,” the release reads. “Price increases has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”
Government Shutdown Complicates Central Bank’s Task
The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are on leave during the closure.
Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions
The Federal Reserve usually analyzes BLS data to determine employment trends, such as the count of new jobs added to the market and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in August.
The number of positions created to the economy in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness crept up to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.
Private Data Show Ongoing Decline
Though BLS was scheduled to release September’s employment data in the start of last month, it halted its publication when the shutdown started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the private sector cut 32,000 positions in last month, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.
“Supply as well as demand for labor has declined significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated recently, which he had earlier said stems from immigration and tariff policies.
Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Rise
Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the bureau still issued its inflation report for September that indicated that prices are going up, albeit gradually. Prices rose three percent over the last year, the peak since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
